Memorial Day

I'll preface this post with an apology that this might just be a rambling pointless post. My mind is a bit scrambled from some recent events that have kind of shaken me up. I'd get into it, but I think it's stuff best kept for our marriage counselor. But, I promise it doesn't mean I love you any less.

Anyways. So tomorrow is Memorial Day. A day for honoring the military, especially the ones who gave their lives for this country. The fact of how lucky we are, that the hubby deployed twice and didn't get a scratch, does not escape me. Nothing was quite like getting to hug him when he got safely home, knowing that so many other wives out there were not. There is a guilt in it too. When your husband is deployed and you hear news that a soldier was killed, you breathe a sigh of relief to find out it wasn't him. But then you feel bad for being so happy, because even though it wasn't your husband, it was somebody's. Some other mom out there is having to explain to her kids why daddy isn't coming home.

I don't get political on here usually. But I do want to be bold today and say something. This Memorial Day, I hope that no one out there mentions how pointless the Iraq war is. That it's meaningless and we never should have gone. Maybe it's true that we never should have gone, I won't get into my thoughts on that right now. But I will say that I refuse to believe that our soldiers have been dying for no reason. I hurt every time someone says very publicly how meaningless the war is. I can't help but think of the thousands of family members of those soldiers who have fallen. Basically being told that their soldier died for nothing. I refuse to believe that. And I'll let you in on a little secret. . .most of the family members refuse to believe it as well.

So I just ask that people focus on what the holiday is about. Honoring those that died to protect this country. Because no matter the circumstances, and whether or not you agree with them, that is what that soldier was doing. Protecting the country he or she loved.

Anyways. So this is supposed to be a holiday weekend. One specifically to honor the military. Guess how my husband, the soldier, gets to spend it? By working! Isn't that nice? (p.s.-he's working today too. Go Army!)

I'm trying to make the best of it, because part of his working day will be playing for a plane of soldiers coming home, which is great. But I still would have liked to go somewhere. I'm just sayin'.

Tomorrow is also our wedding anniversary. Nine years it will be for us since we met at the courthouse and eloped. People didn't even give us six months, considering we had only known each other for less than that when we got married. But, here we are.

Salt in the wound about him having to work tomorrow, is the fact that it's also our anniversary. And we haven't gotten to spend our anniversary together since 2003. No joke. 2004 he was in Iraq, 2005 he was away training, 2006 his grandfather died, and 2007 was once again in Iraq. So, our track record just isn't very good. Sigh.

Our big move coming up is really on our minds lately. And here is something I can ask for advice on. Has anyone moved across country with small children and pets before? We are clueless on how to go about this. See, the way the Army works, they don't allow you to buy a house before you are signed it at the new base. So there will be a period of at least two weeks where we will be living out of hotel. A hotel. With an 8 year old, 5 year old, 4 year old, almost 2 year old, a cat, a dog, and a partridge in a pear tree. (actually a canary in a cage, but same difference right)

Any brilliant ideas?

p.s.-my computer is finally fixed, woohoo! Turns out the motherboard and CPU were totally fried. On a 10 month old computer. Thank goodness for warranties!

Thanks for this post, Meghann. It's a great reminder for all of us, especially those who often look at today as a "day off work" or "reason to BBQ". It's SO much deeper than that - thank you for your beautiful words! I give thanks everyday for people like your husband (and families like yours) who are willing to put their lives on the line every single day.
